The Porosity and Permeability Measuring Device is designed to accurately assess two critical characteristics of reservoir rocks: porosity and permeability. These properties are essential for understanding the storage capacity and fluid flow within the reservoir, directly impacting the efficiency of extraction processes. The device uses nitrogen expansion to measure the grain volume of cleaned and dried samples, and by combining the grain volume with the total volume of the sample, porosity is determined. Permeability is evaluated by measuring the flow rate of fluid through a saturated rock sample, providing reliable data for optimizing reservoir management and extraction processes.

Performance

The device operates based on Boyle's Law (the ideal gas law) to measure the porosity of reservoir rocks. By calculating the grain volume and combining it with the total volume of the sample, porosity is precisely determined. The nitrogen expansion process is used to directly measure the grain volume.

For permeability measurement, the device utilizes the principles of fluid dynamics to assess the fluid flow rate through the saturated rock sample. By measuring the pressure drop across the sample, permeability is accurately calculated, offering vital data to predict fluid flow and optimize extraction operations.
